In an uncertain climate, the auctioneers Christie’s and Sotheby’s have decided to reduce the number of works on sale at their Impressionist and Modern art sales, and instead to emphasise quality. Sotheby’s evening sale of Impressionist & Modern Art this coming 3 February will offer a lean selection of 27 lots, a third of the works up for auction at last year's sale on the same theme.

Underpinning this price progression: a rarefaction of the offer; some exceptional works coming to market and plenty of recent exhibitions.

On 8 November last year, Christie’s New York managed to far outstrip its principal competitor Sotheby’s with a record sale that generated USD 491 million from 78 lots!
This year Sotheby's is planning a spectacular response with its New York sales of ‘Impressionist and Modern Art’ and ‘Contemporary Art’ that it estimates will generate between 416 and 561 millions dollars.

As expected, Christie's auction of Impressionist and Modern art has confirmed that the art market is running at historical highs. In a single evening session involving a total of 78 lots, the auction house generated the astonishing figure of USD 491.4 million, the highest ever turnover at a single sale, far higher than Sotheby's previous global record of USD 286 million notched up in May 1990.

Works by the Die Brücke and Der Blau Reiter groups have been spiralling in price since 1999 (up 25% over the year). After four years of steady increase, from a base of 100 in 1997 the price index for Expressionist works is now 28 points higher than the Artprice Global Index.. In these hard-to-better market conditions, Christie’s is now organising its tenth auction of German and Austrian Art.
